Liver Transplant - Myths And Facts

It weighs 1000 to 1500 mg and is responsible for performing more than 500 functions. Unlike the kidney, we have no artificial machine to take care of all liver functions, so when an individual has liver failure, the only option left is a liver transplant.

Myth 1 - Liver transplantation is only for the elite class
Liver transplant is 100 times cheaper in India than any other developed country in the world. The total cost of the operation ranges from 12 to 25 million. But the most important fact that people don't know is that there are lots of social organizations and NGOs that help people financially with liver transplant. What people fail to understand is that you end up spending more than the cost of a cirrhosis transplant just for repeated admissions with complications. It is better to have a transplant than to be repeatedly admitted to the intensive care unit. Many individuals who present themselves to us have spent upwards of 30-35 million on treatment before even considering a liver transplant.

Myth 2 – Liver transplantation is not successful
Survival rate in India in any center of India is equal to rest of the worlds. In fact, when we compare the data from most of our centers, as well as us LDLT, survival is better. We expect 90% of patients to go home after transplant, and the 5-year survival rate is 70%, which is 5 times that of a patient who needs a liver transplant.
