Relief From Back Pain During Pregnancy

Relief from back pain during pregnancy

Did you know that 50-72% of women experience lower back pain during pregnancy? Studies show that 10% of women will experience back pain for at least two years after giving birth. This article will discuss why back pain develops during pregnancy and a safe and effective method to help with this condition. Most would agree that drugs and surgery are not the answer for women with back problems during pregnancy and even during breastfeeding after giving birth. In 2004, Americans spent $26.1 billion trying to find relief from back pain during pregnancy. Since treatment options are limited during pregnancy for the safety of the mother and fetus, a non-surgical and drug-free option would be the best course of action. Fortunately, this option exists in the form of chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic offers a safe, non-invasive approach to managing back discomfort during pregnancy that uses a proven method of care. Due to the changes that occur in a woman's body during pregnancy, the lower part of the spine in the pelvis is prone to misalignment and improper movement. The bones lower down the spine are called the lumbar vertebrae. The pelvis is made up of three separate bones made up of two winged bones called the Ilium and a central tailbone called the Sacrum. Due to the weight and position of the growing fetus, any of the lumbar vertebrae and pelvic bones may experience misalignment and misalignment of the joints. A chiropractic examination will reveal where incorrect biomechanical changes are occurring in the lower back and pelvis. Safe, gentle, chiropractic adjustments (sometimes called chiropractic manipulation) can then be applied to the pregnant woman to provide effective relief from lower back pain during pregnancy. In 2009, 78 pregnant women participated in a research study to evaluate the disability and pain intensity of chiropractic care for back discomfort during pregnancy. For disability, 51% showed improvement with chiropractic care. For pain, 67% showed significant improvement. At follow-up 11 months later, 85% rated their improvement as excellent or good! Research also shows that women who receive chiropractic care during pregnancy experience a faster labor time and less discomfort during labor.
